Along the borders of California and Arizona there are gaps in the security system which secures illegal immigrants, contraband and foreign military from illegally entering. A group calling themselves the Minutemen have taken it upon themselves to guard these uncontrolled areas. The Minuteman's mission statement: "It is the mission of the Minute Men Civil Defense Corpse to see the borders and coastal boundaries of the United Sates secured against the unlawful and unauthorized entry of all individuals, contraband, and foreign military. We employ all means of civil protest, demonstrations, and political lobbying to accomplish this goal." You can find more details at www.minutemenhq.com. Keep in mind these are regular citizens just like you and me. Not police or military. These Minutemen are armed and can potentially be dangerous. Are Californians going "overboard" with the illegal immigration issue, and if so, why now? It's been happening for years. Or has it just recently gotten so out of hand that citizens are feeling obligated to "protect" their country and state?
This force is coming from both sides. Activist groups such as the Buenas Noches Brigade (www.sandiego.indymedia.com) are fighting to keep these gaps along the border open. Just last Tuesday they hosted a non-violent protest for over an hour at one of the Minutemen's border locations. California government needs to direct some attention to the border issue at hand. What can we as "average" people do to protect California laws AND Human lives at risk?
It seems to me that immigration laws have gotten much worst the past few years because of the bill that President Bush passed regarding the wall being built up more along California from Mexico. Not only that, but people are becoming more aware or immigration. Maybe there are more overpopulated places than in the past.
